Substuck
Everything you do is wrong.
Everything you think is wrong.
Everything you write, choose, believe, feel, love, fear, enjoy, detest, every little thing that affects you and the way you are? All of it, wrong.
I know this because I am told this constantly, daily, by friends, coworkers, and the juggernaut of rot: the EF-1000 Douchenado of social media.
I write here on Substack because it’s easy, it’s accessible, I can monetize it, I can view stats, and so on.
“But they platform Nazis!”
Fuck. They do. Or they did? They cracked down on some overtly Nazi pages, apparently. But was it a token gesture to shut up the critics, stem the tide of evacuees to other services? Am I promoting Nazis implicitly by using this platform?
What’s a better one?
Medium? I have an account, but I don’t see a huge advantage to jumping ship.
The thing is, I have a microscopically small audience, which is fine, but among those who do take the time to read my stuff, the last thing I want to do is make it harder for them to find my stuff. It’s already here. And I know how easy it is to lose someone.
Changing platforms can be a surefire way to lose a good chunk of your attention. With my audience, that’s not a great idea.
I can get what I need out of this page.
Wordpress? Have an account, but it’s likely far ore robust than I need, especially at this point. And if I put the time and money (I don’t have) into transitioning to their platform, and moving my subscribers over, etc., how much would it help me?
Unless what I do here suddenly clicks outside of the tiny circle who visit this site, and the even smaller amount of those who return, and I am dealing with actual numbers of readers, I don’t see the need to bust my ass to force a change I may not need.
But Nazis.
Yeah. Those guys are fucking horrible.
I know I’m wrong about everything, because that’s the world now. And if you don’t agree with me, you’re wrong too.
Given that we’re all wrong (mostly you, of course), if you write, publish, have a platform you use for regular readership, subscriptions, monetization, freedom to write whatever you like, the independence to own and control your work, and the lot, and you have suggestions, I am all ears. Let me know what works for you.
My ideal position is an organically earned audience, interested in and willing to take the time to read my work. I’d love for it to be profitable enough to make a difference, if not sustaining. I know that’s a big goal, and as much as I despise self-promotion, it’s also an unlikely goal. But I did say ideal, and that’s the ideal. I say what I want, and people pay me for it.
Oh, and there are no Nazis involved whatsoever. Because if there is one absolute to gather here, it’s that Nazis are, have been, and always will be, wrong.
But yeah, give me your thoughts.
And buy me a coffee.
